The Club

We are a student-run club existing as part of the larger True Peace Toronto sangha.
Being centered around mindfulness, we participate in events as a part of this larger community (meditations, gardening, retreats), while also hosting and enjoying student-specific events like dinners and board game nights! We really support and listen to one another.

Why Meditate?
Written for a student, by a student
As students, we can become stressed out and overwhelmed. It can feel like there are never enough hours in a day, such that slowing down and relaxing can feel like falling behind. Living in a world of instant gratification and overstimulation, focusing seems to take up every last ounce of our energy and willpower.

Meditation is often sold as a way to be calmer – one more tool in the toolbelt – but this is a shallow perception. Mindfulness meditation means paying clear attention to one’s experience. In cultivating this presence, we become able to make more meaningful contact with our lives, gaining deeper insight into ourselves, the world, and our relationship to it.

We can’t actively change anything that we aren’t aware of. This includes all the big and small ways in which we suffer unnecessarily:
-
The way we’re too busy worrying about our responsibilities to ever enjoy time off
-
How we ruminate over a bad course grade, even though there is nothing to be done about it anymore
-
The way we treat negative self-talk as fact, rather than as simple thoughts
-
How our doomscrolling and binge-watching makes us feel way worse, and yet, we do it all again tomorrow

Whether adhering to the science or ancient wisdom, the conclusion is the same: This practice helps foster greater self-awareness, peace, and happiness! The quality of your mind really does determine the quality of your life.

What to expect
Early in the practice, it’s normal to face boredom, judgment, as well as uncomfortable stressors and emotions. So, is the practice some unpleasant waste of time?

At first, meditation can be challenging exactly because we begin with an untrained mind. In the same way that someone new to working out will experience growing pains, we may as well. Just start where you are and be gentle with yourself, understanding that the practice does grow more enjoyable! Many benefits of meditation are rather immediate, however, it might take some time before noticing its true impact.

Apps
Practicing as part of a supportive community is a real blessing, however, apps can be another wonderful source of guidance! While our members recommend the Plum Village and Waking Up apps, a wide variety of apps are available.
